MCC Team #JetJaguar Takes Home Grand Prize for the Deepracer Challenge: Battle of the Schools

Rochester-area college students get hands-on AI and ML programming experience at EagleDream’s Deepracer Challenge: Battle of the Schools!

On Wednesday March 4th, six teams from MCC, RIT, and University of Rochester competed to program an autonomous 1/18th scale racecar designed by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in EagleDream’s Deepracer Challenge: Battle of the Schools.

Team #JetJaguar from MCC took home the Grand Prize of a personalized Sportscar Weekend Experience at Watkins Glen International with a winning time of 9.66 seconds! Challenged with only 3 weeks, the team worked together to program the AWS Deepracer Car. The self-driving cars use reinforcement learning, a type of machine learning that allows the software to automatically determine the ideal behavior within a specific context, in order to maximize its performance. The 10-inch-long car uses cameras to view the track and a reinforcement model trained in a simulated environment to control throttle and steering.

Each participating team had 10 minutes to complete as many laps around the track as possible within the time allotted. The fastest lap, while staying on the roadway wins. “A lot of computer science happens at a computer or a whiteboard,” said Sam Kuzio, a fifth-year RIT computer science student. “What makes this competition so great is that we get to see the things we’re doing work in the real world.”

EagleDream would like to congratulate all the students that participated in this year’s race!
