#LetsTalkAboutIt: Acknowledging Mental Health During the Month of May

According to Mental Health America, the month of May is dedicated to raising awareness about the stigma of mental health and has been observed in the United States since 1949, reaching millions of people in the United States through the media, local events, and screenings. This month EagleDream is on a mission to bring our community together to break the stigma on mental health with our campaign #LetsTalkAboutIt. 

In the following post we will highlight where you can find some helpful resources for your team and stay up to date with EagleDream’s month-long initiatives.  

Why We’re Launching #LetsTalkAboutIt

With these unprecedented times, it is important to acknowledge not only the physical effects of COVID-19, but the mental health effects in which it entails, whether you’re working from home or are working in the office. According to Mental Health America, their screenings have shown a 19 percent increase in screening for clinical anxiety in the first weeks of February, and a 12 percent increase in the first two weeks of March.  In regards to the technology industry, here are some quick facts and data on the significance of mental health among tech employees from a study conducted by Blind, an anonymous workplace review service: 

  • 39% of tech employees report experiencing depression due to burnout, high-stress levels, insomnia, overworking, irregular hours, and more.
  • 58% of tech workers suffer from impostor syndrome–the feeling they aren’t qualified for the job position they occupy–which could also play a role in adding to high stress levels.
  • According to a study conducted in the UK, two-thirds of tech workers feel stressed and over half (52%) have suffered either anxiety or depression at some point. This is 5 times the UK average.
​Ways to Acknowledge Mental Health in Your Organization

According to the CDC, approximately 63% of Americans are part of the US labor force. The workplace can be a key to improving well-being among working adults. Addressing mental health in the workplace can reduce health costs for businesses and employees. Here are just a few ways to start the conversation:

  • Communicate with employees and let them know that your organization’s leadership team is open to a conversation on mental health.
  • Implement an accessible mental-health plan.
  • Share information about policies, programs, benefits, resources and training.
  • Enhance company culture through virtual lunches, games nights – bring your teams together!

Tips to Combat Stress During These Times

Exercise and stay active

Whether you choose to walk, stretch, or do a set of jumping jacks, increase your endorphins by scheduling some physical activity during the day. Given that gyms are closed during this time, many are offering virtual or app-based workouts to the general public.

Get some fresh air

If you’re able to safely do so, go outside for a quick walk and breathe in some fresh air. Avoid crowds and practice safe social distancing.

Set boundaries on your work schedule

It can be tempting to work more from home. Although getting ahead on work enhances productivity, it can also be taxing on your mental health. Be sure to set healthy boundaries for yourself.

Stay connected

Share tips with co-workers and friends on what’s working well for you and encourage them to do the same. Chances are they’re looking to find new ways to making the adjustment of working from home as comfortable as possible. We’re staying connected via RingCentral by:

  • Company-wide all-hands meetings every Friday
  • Game nights
