#LetsTalkAboutIt: Acknowledging Mental Health in Your Organization

Let’s face it. Acknowledging mental health in an organization isn’t always easy. That’s why we’ve started our #LetsTalkAbout it campaign in order to get the discussion started. Here are a few key statistics:

  • According to Mental Health America, there has been a 19 percent increase in screening for clinical anxiety in the first weeks of February and a 12 percent increase in the first two weeks of March due to COVID-19
  • 39% of tech employees report experiencing depression due to burnout, high-stress levels, insomnia, overworking, irregular hours, and more.
  • 58% of tech workers suffer from impostor syndrome–the feeling they aren’t qualified for the job position they occupy–which could also play a role in adding to high stress levels.

Poor mental health and stress can affect an employee’s job performance and engagement with others, so what can you do as a leader to combat burn-out and stress as an organization?

Ways to Start the Mental Health Conversation

1. Survey Your Organization

The first part to finding out if there is a problem to be acknowledged in your company is by asking employees. A good way to do this is by conducting an anonymous survey or short questionnaire around the basics of mental health. Having employees actively participate in the conversation is a crucial step. For example, EagleDream Technologies provided a five-minute survey to our employees and here were the results:

  • 85% of employees have experienced some type of stress, while 65% have been experiencing symptoms of anxiety
  • Feedback on how we could improve our company culture include meditation and mindfulness classes
  • 42% of employees would like greater access to mental health resources

2. Let your employees know that you’re there for them

Communicate with employees and let them know that your organization’s leadership team is open to a conversation on mental health. The transition of working from home comes with its difficulties. Adjusting to virtual modes of communication can be a tough adjustment for some, but sometimes actions speak louder than words! For example:

  • Sending a small gesture of reassurance such as a care package or a free food voucher to your employees shows a sign that you’re there for them
  • Creating a virtual “Afternoon Tea/Coffee Break Hour” to discuss concerns that employees may have
  • Having “walking” meetings where everyone goes outside for a call/meeting

3. Host seminars or workshops

Providing workshops that address stress management techniques such as mindfulness and breathing exercises can help employees reduce stress and anxiety while promoting focus and motivation. Each week EagleDream hosts yoga classes for our employees, and just recently we added a meditation class due to high demand!

4. Enhance company culture through virtual lunches and games nights

Working from home influences work-life balance and company culture. According to the survey our organization conducted, 75% of employees have seen a shift in work-life balance—both positive and negative, since COVID-19. Avoid its impact by having virtual lunches once a week or a game night with your team. Whether it be bonding over a meal or competing in a friendly game of trivia, having a time where employees can look forward to de-stress for an hour or so can improve productivity and decrease the chances of burn-out.
